Baba Brinkman's A Rap Guide to Religion Playing at Soho Playhouse
February 4, 2015
How did religion evolve? And how do religions evolve? Part rap concert, part TedEx talk, Baba Brinkman combines humor, music, and primary literature to answer these questions in his show “The Rap Guide to Religion”.
Brinkman is upfront with his audience from the beginning – there is no room for the supernatural in his show. Instead, he tackles scientific, evidence-based theories of how religion developed from an evolutionary perspective and how it may still be evolving as culture changes.
Brinkman explained theories that religion is a by-product of other evolutionarily beneficial cognitive developments – such as the desire to explain the world around us, the ability to interpret another’s intentions or desires, and our hard-wired instinct to assume that things happen for a specific purpose. He also raps about how religions have changed over the millennia from animism and tribal gods to an omniscient, monotheistic, morality-based structure.
Brinkman’s “A Rap Guide to Religion” is playing at the Soho Playhouse through March 1.
